When is it not advisable to supplement iron?Updated 10 months ago
Iron supplementation is recommended only in case of proven iron deficiency. Since the human body is not equipped with any mechanism to eliminate excess iron from the body, elevated levels can increase oxidative stress leading to inflammation, damage to DNA molecules and lead to premature cellular ageing.
Iron supplementation is not advisable in times of acute inflammation or infectious disease. The growth and multiplication of many bacteria depend on the intake of this mineral and supplementation may further increase the risk of infection!!!
