In the marine ecosystem, algae and plankton are the primary sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish, which lack the enzymes necessary for synthesizing EPA and DHA, obtain omega-3 by consuming algae and plankton. On land, fresh pasture is the primary source of omega-3 fatty acids. Animals raised using traditional methods that graze freely on grass and forage thus naturally synthesize omega-3s.
Although wild-caught marine fish are the most natural source of omega-3 fatty acids with high levels of EPA and DHA, their frequent consumption is not recommended for pregnant women, nursing mothers, and children due to the potential for elevated heavy metal contamination.
