What is the difference between natural sources of calcium and synthetic forms?Updated 2 days ago

Product Calcium+D3/K2 contains a natural form of calcium, derived from the wild red algae Lithothamnion superpositum. These are hand-picked and then sun-dried. Compared to synthetic forms, it offers a number of benefits. 

Unlike synthetic forms of calcium, it naturally contains other minerals and trace elements (such as magnesium, potassium, and iodine) that support its absorption and utilization by the body. Calcium from natural sources is generally more bioavailable than commonly used synthetic forms, such as calcium carbonate.

Calcium absorption in the Calcium+D3/K2 is further supported by vitamin D3 from lichen, which is essential for its absorption in the intestines. Vitamin K2 MK-7, obtained through the fermentation of chickpeas, aids in the proper deposition of calcium in the bones and limits its deposition in blood vessels and soft tissues.

Synthetic forms of calcium (e.g., calcium carbonate or calcium citrate) are isolated compounds whose bioavailability may be lower and also depends on the condition of the digestive tract. For example, calcium carbonate requires sufficient stomach acid for optimal absorption, which can be a problem, particularly in older adults or in people taking proton pump inhibitors (PPIs).
